ILS is presenting another great event this week about the first prisoner put through the Guantanamo torture system and the comparative law influences behind the case!  Mr. Arthur Emery, worked on Abu Zubaydah’s case pro-bono and will be sharing with us his research and perspectives.

Abu Zubaydah, or Patient Zero, was the keystone for the enhanced interrogation techniques famously employed by Guantanamo. Zubaydah’s capture was touted as one of the biggest catches in the War On Terror. But on a second look, the “facts” that the government used to justify Zubaydah’s arrest and the creation of the torture regime are plagued by controversies. Furthermore, the justification for our abandonment of international prisoner doctrine is highly questionable. Mr. Emery will explore the government’s misunderstanding of foreign legal systems and foreign cultures which led us down the path of torture in the war against al Qaeda.
